Champaign Exchange Club History

The Exchange Club of Champaign Charter on July 27, 1926

On May 26, 1926 the Exchange Club of Champaign held its Permanent Organizational Meeting at the Inman Hotel in downtown Champaign. Sponsored by the Exchange Club of Springfield, IL, the Champaign Club officially chartered July 27, 1926. Just two months later the Champaign Club built the Exchange Club of Urbana. Both clubs are going strong today.

The club met for its first 40+ years at the Inman Hotel. Other major locations include the Moose Lodge, Round Barn Restaurant & Banquet Centre, Chancellor Hotel, and Howard Johnsons. We meet each Monday noon at O”Charley’s Restaurant , 730 West Town Center Blvd., Champaign.

The charter president of the Champaign Club was attorney Earl C. Harrington and the secretary was sporting goods store owner G. Seely Johnston, the late husband of Anne Johnston. Seely continued as a loyal member until his passing in 2001.
